MuFoCo, Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea, is the only public museum in Italy dedicated to (contemporary) photography. It focuses on the preservation, cataloging, study and diffusion of information about photography, with particular emphasis not only on the technological evolutions under way but also the relationship between photography and other art forms.
Founded in 2004, the museum is headquartered at Villa Ghirlanda in Cinisello Balsamo.
Both the Museum and its Foundation offer a rich events program including exhibitions, meetings and seminars, courses and workshops.
Lying adjacent to the Museum is a well-stocked library containing as many as 20,000 books including monographs of the main protagonists of international historical and contemporary photography, catalogues of personal and collective exhibitions, theoretical and historical texts as well as collections of Italian and foreign magazines.
Giuliano Pisapia, the Mayor of Milan, is the President of the Fondazione Museo Fotografia Contemporanea constituted by the Province of Milan and the Municipality of Cinisello Balsamo. The Regione Lombardia and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities collaborated in the creation of the Museum during the project start-up phase in 1998.
