Founded by the monks of the Humiliates Order in the first half of the 13th century, the Abbey of Mirasole is considered one of the most impressive examples of a medieval farmhouse courtyard in Italy. The architecture of modern-day Lombardy farmhouses are, in fact, inspired by this type of building, part monastery, part farmhouse, referred to as “granges”. The Abbey or Mirasole buildings were protected by a moat and a tower, formerly replete with a drawbridge. The courtyard was surrounded by stables, houses and laboratories for the working of wool. The cloisters, onto which the refectory, the kitchens, the chapter house and sacristy faced were located next to the courtyard. The church, dedicated to Santa Maria, dates back to the end of the 14th century. Its interior is covered by coffered wooden ceilings and its choir hosts a fresco of the “Assumption of the Virgin Mary”, the work of an unknown artist dating back to 1460.
