Have you ever seen a fragment of the moon? The new area of Milan’s Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia dedicated to space and astronomy is now open to the public. An interactive trip in discovery of places, people and technologies related to space exploration.
Housed in a 16th century monastery, Leonardo da Vinci Museum of Science and Technology is one of the city’s most vibrant cultural places and it is ranked among the world’s most important scientific museums. Its collections – cars, planes, ships and trains! – and its sections – from metal working to electronics, from communications to plastic – explore the relationship between men and machines starting from the ingenious inventions of Leonardo da Vinci.
Other sections, such as the exciting interactive part entitled “Spazio”, devoted entirely to space exploration and astronomy complete the offer.

Collaboration with CERN

The latest section inaugurated, named “Extreme” and opened on 12 July 2016, is born from the collaboration between the Museum and the CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research) and features groundbreaking insights on nuclear studies, as well as highlight on the instruments used for research and on scientists’ daily lives. Three different multimedia installations provide insightful information on subatomic particles.
Divided into two parts, “Osservare lo Spazio” and “Andare nello Spazio”, the new area traces four centuries of research on astronomy and space, from Galileo to the present-time, with, naturally, a nod to the future. The themes are presented according to an immersive and interactive format. In addition to extremely rare objects, including a fragment of lunar rock, a Russian cosmonaut’s space suit and numerous ‘tools of the trade’, place of pride is given to a reproduction of a portion of the International Space Station. And since the idea of space travel has attracted mankind since the very beginning there is also no lack of references to literature, films and video games.

Guided tours

Guided tours in the English language at the National Museum of Science and Technology: as an example, during Summer 2017 international visitors have the chance to discover Leonardo da Vinci engineer by visiting the historical gallery of models (every day at 11 am | age +8). The activity is included in the entrance ticket and has to be booked online on the Museum website.

Tickets: regular tickets from 10 euro + guided tour inside the Enrico Toti submarine 8 euro; reductions available.
