Famous travelers and their quotations

This lake exceeds anything I ever beheld in beauty […] It is long and narrow, and has the appearance of a mighty river winding among the mountains and the forests

English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, who stayed here in the 1820s

when every thing seems to slumber, and the music of the vesper bells comes stealing over the water, one almost believes that nowhere else can there be found such a paradise of tranquil repose.

American writer Mark Twain, ‘The Innocents Abroad‘,1867

When you write the story of two happy lovers, set it on the banks of Lake Como. I do not know of any place which is more demonstrably blessed by heaven

Hungarian pianist and composer Franz Listz, who lived in Bellagio in the late 1830s
