About the Exhibition
Fondazione Prada presents in Milan the exhibition ‘Domenico Gnoli’, more than 100 works created from 1949 to 1969 accompanied by as many drawings. A chronological and documentary section with historical materials, photographs and other evidence helps to reconstruct the biographical and artistic path of Domenico Gnoli (Rome, 1933 – New York, 1970), more than fifty years after his death.
A point of reference for generations of artists, Gnoli is difficult to classify in a current: a painter but also a set designer, poster artist and designer, he created a narrative art with clearly recognisable features.
More details
The installation is designed by Studio 2×4 of New York and is spread over the two floors of the ‘Podium‘ of the exhibition venue. It evokes the layout and characteristics of twentieth-century museum, with the works grouped in thematic series, thanks to which it is possible to recognize how each work generated other works in a coherent expressive direction.
This retrospective is part of a sequence of exhibitions that Fondazione Prada has dedicated to outsider artists such as Edward Kienholz, Leon Golub and William Copley, who can hardly be assimilated to the main artistic currents of the second half of the 20th century.
The project was developed in collaboration with the artist’s archives in Rome and Mallorca.
