Exhibition: “Tiepolo, Canaletto e i maestri del Settecento veneziano”

Milan and the Sforza Castle pay tribute to the artistic genius of eighteenth-century Venetian masters like Tiepolo, Canaletto, and many others apart with the exhibition “Tiepolo, Canaletto e i maestri del Settecento veneziano nei disegni e nelle stampe del Castello Sforzesco“.
Hosted in the spaces of the Sale dell’Antico Ospedale Spagnolo (rooms of the ancient Spanish hospital) of Castello Sforzesco, the exhibition gathers 48 works among drawings and prints, coming from some famous private collections in Milan such as those of two great art historians: Giovanni Morelli and Gustavo Frizzoni.

The works on display highlight the genius and creativity of 5 Venetian artists from the 18th century such as Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and Giandomenico Tiepolo, Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, Antonio Canal (mostly known as Canaletto), and Bernardo Bellotto.

What’s on display?

The diplay opens with the first room fully dedicated to Giambattista Tiepolo and to his son Giandomenico, and features drawings of caricatures, animals and mythological scenes but also the splendid series of etchings of Giovanni Battista’s “Capricci” and Giandomenico’s “Idee Pittoresche”.
The exhibition continues in the second room with one of the masterpieces by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, the “Portrait of Field Marshal Mathias von der Schulenburg”, and some “heads of character” by the same author. The masterpiece is followed by some real and imaginary views of Padua and Venice engraved by Canaletto. The exhibition also boasts a specific focus on vedutism, explained by two prints made in Dresden for the great Elector of Saxony, Augustus III, by Bernardo Bellotto.
