The exhibition by Gian Maria Tosatti (Rome, 1980; lives and works in Naples) consists of two cycles of paintings presented for the first time at Pirelli HangarBicocca, “Ritratti” (2022) and “NOw/here” (2023). These large-format paintings are set up in close relationship with the architecture of the Pirelli HangarBicocca space, generating moments of dialogue and contrasting situations. “Ritratti” is composed of four paintings in gold and rust on iron panels assembled and installed on joint tube structures, while the “NOw/here” series takes the form of ten large backgrounds of graphite and white charcoal on canvas suspended from the ceiling.
An opportunity to reflect on topical issues and the human condition at such a complex time as today, when society is poised between catastrophe and evolution. The works are also conceived as ‘mirrors’, open questions that directly call the visitor into question.
