About the exhibition
This anthological exhibition is the most important to date on the work of the Milanese artist Grazia Varisco. An exhibition that covers 60 years of her projects on multi-sensory perception translated into active aesthetic experience.
The themes of Grazia Varisco’s artistic research are presented divided by type of work, from the early 1960s to her most recent experiences: I Materici (1957-1959) are the first works created during her studies at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, as experiences of reaction to the figurative. The Magnetic Tables (1959-1962) are the first researches linked to the formation of the Gruppo T (of which Grazia Varisco is the protagonist together with Anceschi, Boriani, Colombo and De Vecchi) and highlight the representation of space-time and a strong interest in the dynamics of play. This was followed by the artistic experiences of the 1960s, through which the artist explored the moving image. This was followed by another period of experimentation with unconventional materials with which he experimented with the decomposition of images. The artistic developments of the 1970s are characterised by reflections on the theme of anomaly and the unexpected.
The 1980s and 1990s saw a progressive tension towards abstraction, essentiality and the simplification of form. The researches of the new millennium see Grazia Varisco’s work explore new forms linked to change and the ambiguity of perception, involving the viewer in a continuous dialogue between programme and chance.
