The exhibition “Guy Bourdin: Storyteller” is a tribute to the work of the French photographer: an artist capable of encapsulating entire novels, preferably detective or noir, in a single shot.
Presented in the Armani/Silos spaces are one hundred photographs that Giorgio Armani together with The Guy Bourdin Estate has selected from iconic shots and lesser-known images.
The use of saturated colours – a distinctive feature of Bourdin’s style – is explored through entire rooms dedicated to reds, greens and pinks, as well as his his skill in playing with deconstructed form, particularly with mannequins, and his unmistakable idea of composition. Twenty-one black and white photographs show how Bourdin’s expressive ability is immediately perceived even with the simplest of contrasts. One section explores Bourdin’s love for cinema, a central element of his creativity, and presents a selection of photographs of advertising campaigns showing what appear to be crime scenes or police chases, which hark back to his fascination with Alfred Hitchcock and the theme of the ‘mysterious plot’.

The choice of Giorgio Armani
This exhibition confirms my desire to make Armani/Silos a centre of contemporary photographic culture, including what is close to the world of Armani, but also what is far from it. At first glance, Guy Bourdin is not an author close to me: his was a sharp, graphic, strong language. In his work what you immediately perceive, on the surface, is provocation, but what strikes me, and that I wanted to emphasise, is rather his creative freedom, his narrative ability and his great love for cinema. Bourdin did not follow current and did not compromise: a trait in which I recognise myself. I believe there is no other way to leave a mark on the collective imagination.” (Giorgio Armani)
