About the Exhibition
This exhibition project narrates two Chinese reportages by the great exponent of world photojournalism Henri Cartier-Bresson, famous for his “decisive instant” in photography. The eye of his lens picks up on important themes of change in contemporary Chinese history, presenting to the Western world even aspects kept hidden by regime propaganda. A corpus of over one hundred original prints and a collection of documents and archival materials tell the story of two key moments in China’s history: the Fall of the Kuomintang (1948-1949) and Mao Zedong’s “Great Leap Forward” (1958).
>> Sometimes people ask me “Which is your favourite photo among the ones you have taken?” I don’t know, I don’t care. What I do care about is the next photo I’m going to take or the place I’m going to visit. Henri Cartier-Bresson
