The exhibition hosted in the spaces of the Orangerie at the Villa Reale di Monza (30 km from Milan) traces the history of one of the most important artistic movements on the Italian cultural scene, which anticipated the style of the French Impressionists with surprising modernity. Developing in the second half of the 19th century, the Macchiaioli revolution is analysed in a European context, and focuses on the technical innovations that the fathers of “en plein air” art developed in the areas of landscape, genre and history painting.
The exhibition presents 90 works, from private collections, but also from a number of important institutions such as the Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci in Milan, Palazzo Foresti in Carpi, the Fondazione Cariparma in Parma, and the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan, by artists such as Telemaco Signorini, Giovanni Fattori, Giuseppe Abbati, Silvestro Lega, Vincenzo Cabianca, Raffaello Sernesi, and Odoardo Borrani.
