About the Exhibition
Joaquín Sorolla. Pittore di luce (Master of light) brings to the Palazzo Reale, for the first time in Italy, an exhibition dedicated to the great Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923).
Little known to the general public, Sorolla was one of the greatest representatives of modern Spanish painting between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, contributing significantly to its renewal. The exhibition features 60 works divided into 5 thematic sections that trace the extraordinary career of this Spanish painter, among the most appreciated of his time.
The works of Joaquín Sorolla, a great interpreter of painting “en plein air”, lead visitors to encounter the light of the Mediterranean, to discover it as it passes through gardens, landscapes, faces.
Also on display are portraits of the Spanish royal family and fellow artists, such as the sculptor Paolo Trubetzkoy and the well-known American jewelry designer Louis Comfort Tiffany. The main subject of his works, however, has always been his family, whose portraits lead into an extraordinary world of light and reflections.
About the artist
Sorolla left a fundamental contribution to European art, opening it to the climate of the Belle Époque. At the beginning of the twentieth century he quickly gained international fame, critical acclaim and important commissions. Launched on the European and American scene thanks to the encounter with the patron Archer Milton Huntington, has realized at the Hispanic Society of America in New York a monumental pictorial cycle dedicated to the Spanish culture.
In Italy he participated in the Venice Biennial since the first edition in 1895, and then the International Exhibition of Rome in 1911.
