Déplacé∙e∙s is the first Italian solo exhibition of JR, the French artist famous worldwide for his projects that combine photography, public art and social commitment. Combining different expressive languages, the artist brings to the exhibition at Gallerie d’Italia Torino, realised in collaboration with the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo and curated by Arturo Galansino, his touch to narrate reality and stimulate reflections on social fragility.
With Déplacé∙e∙s project, which began in 2022 and is presented for the first time in this exhibition, the artist has travelled to crisis zones, from the war-torn Ukraine to the exterminated refugee camps of Mugombwa in Rwanda and Mbera in Mauritania, Cùcuta in Colombia and Lesbos in Greece to reflect on the difficult conditions in which thousands of people find themselves today due to conflicts, wars, famine and climate change, and to involve publics excluded from the artistic and cultural circuit under the banner of values such as freedom, imagination, creativity and participation. Although ephemeral, JR’s art creates an impact on society and the world we live in. It is made for people and is made with people.
The public performance in Piazza San Carlo
On Tuesday 7 february 2023, the artist JR realised a public art performance in which hundreds of people were involved in bringing five tarpaulins, depicting images of children ecountered during visits to refugee camps from Rwanda to Greece, to Piazza San Carlo from the adjacent streets, some of which are featured in the exhibition. The event, filmed by drones, showed the meeting of the children’s figures, creating an unprecedented spectacle.
