About the exhibition

In the magnificent Sala della Cariatidi in the Palazzo Reale you can visit the exhibition ‘Michelangelo’s Pietà. Three historical casts for the Sala delle Cariatidi‘. The exhibition allows visitors to appreciate the evolution of Michelangelo’s art through the comparison of three nineteenth and twentieth century casts, in ideal continuity with the exhibition that has just ended with great success at the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo in Florence. Three long canvases, unfolded for the entire height of the room and with great visual impact, serve as a backdrop to the Pietà, amplifying its strong aesthetic value and the religious sense evoked by the sculptor in the different phases of his life.
On the occasion of the exhibition, a careful documentary and iconographic research on the three Pietà has been promoted, aimed at creating a visual narrative capable of presenting episodes in recent history that have had Michelangelo’s sculptures as protagonists: restorations, installations and transfers immortalised by testimonies, such as period shots and films, from important Italian archives and photo libraries that have collaborated on the project.

In the words of the Councillor for Culture Tommaso Sacchi “It will be a great emotion to be able to embrace the three Pietà at a single glance, and the comparison, in Milan, can be complemented by a visit to the Museum of the Pietà Rondanini at the Castello Sforzesco, where the original of the last Pietà, the one on which the Maestro worked until the last days of his life, is located”.
