With the exhibition “Neoclassical and Romantic. Pompeo Marchesi, sculptor and collector”, GAM Galleria d’Arte Moderna carries on the promotion of some of the most significant nucleuses of its collections.
The exhibition, set up in the rooms on the ground floor of the Villa Reale, pays tribute to Pompeo Marchesi, a great sculptor of the 19th century and a trait d’union in the transition from Neoclassicism to Romanticism.
A pupil of Antonio Canova, contemporary and friend of Francesco Hayez, the sculptor trained at the Brera Academy and participated in the city’s most important building sites, from the Arco della Pace to the Duomo. The exhibition, 240 years after his birth, reconstructs the collection of the sculptor, an artist of fundamental importance for the history of the museum and the art collections of the City of Milan. Classicist and perfect in form, his sculpture is in balance between the search for an ideal and eternal beauty, borrowed from Canova, and the unfolding of a more modern romantic sensibility. The exhibition is also an opportunity to show the results of an extensive restoration campaign on Marchesi’s sculptures, sketches and terracottas.
