About the exhibition

Nicolas Party has designed a body of new works in close dialogue with the masterpieces in the collection of the Poldi Pezzoli Museum. The Swiss artist has chosen a triptych as the guiding thread for his project, inspired by the work of the same name by Mariotto Albertinelli in the Museum’s collection.
The artist creates an unexpected juxtaposition by comparing the widespread classical format of Medieval and Renaissance altarpieces to Marcel Duchamp’s “Boîte-en-Valise” (a legendary avant-garde object created by the French artist in the 1940s to contain miniaturised reproductions of his own works).
Five freestanding, richly decorated triptychs by Party are installed in the centre of the Salone Dorato, one of the Museum’s most famous rooms housing masterpieces from the collection, including paintings by Andrea Mantegna, Sandro Botticelli, Piero del Pollaiolo and Piero della Francesca.

More details

The exhibition continues the Museum’s dialogue between the ancient and the contemporary: from the taste of Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli to the aesthetics of a young contemporary art exponent, Nicolas Party. This exhibition is part of the programme begun in 2011 to show works by contemporary artists inspired by the Museum’s masterpieces.
