About the event

Piano City Milano returns again this year in May for three days of non-stop music. The notes of the pianos will invade the city and beyond, bringing music to the general public with hundreds of free concerts spread throughout the territory.
Piano City Milano, now in its eleventh edition, has established itself as a unique event of its kind for its strong commitment to cultural and social issues. A festival that, by involving institutions, associations, partners and citizens, makes the city more and more active, thanks to music.
The numbers from previous editions confirm this: more than 3,000 concerts in 350 venues in the city of Milan and other Lombardy municipalities, with over 3,500 artists and an increasingly large and diverse audience. With the House Concerts and the Concerti in Cortile it has transformed private spaces into meeting places and musical performances, and with the Piano Nights it has enlivened the city even after the stroke of midnight with concerts until dawn, bringing music to the most important parks and museums.
It has raised the curtain of the Teatro Lirico Giorgio Gaber, which has been closed for over 22 years, it has committed itself to social issues with special events and initiatives to experience urban spaces, it has brought the general public to places such as city hospitals and prisons and it has given space to sensitive issues by bringing music to emblematic places of hospitality.

Edition 2022 preview

Every year the festival offers the public unique moments to remember together myths of Italian and international music, touching different genres, ranging from classical to songwriting, from pop to soundtracks to experimental music.
This year there will be tributes to singer-songwriters such as Lucio Battisti, Lucio Dalla and Fabrizio De Andrè, and to well-known bands such as The Beatles, Earth Wind & Fire and Coldplay. Great composers of the past such as Bach, Beethoven, Erik Satie, George Crumb, Iannis Xenakis, Thelonious Monk, and Ennio Morricone are celebrated.
A prominent theme of this edition is “Music and Freedom“, including a tribute to Frederic Rzewski, a Piano Lesson recalling Marija Judina, the pianist who moved Stalin, and a concert by a young Russian pianist performing music by Ukrainian composers.
