About the Opera
The 2022 opera season at La Scala opens with “Boris Godunov“, a Russian opera by Modest Petrovich Musorgsky. Music director will be Riccardo Chailly and director the Danish Kasper Holten, former director of the Royal Opera House in London and vice-president of the board of directors of the European Academy of Musical Theatre, who in Milan staged in 2016 “The Turn of the Shrew” by Benjamin Britten. Holten in 2016 staged the same title at Covent Garden, conducted by Antonio Pappano.
On stage in this edition of La Scala in 2022 is the bass Ildar Abdrazakov, who already starred at La Scala in 2021 in the role of Banco in “Macbeth”.
After forty-three years, Boris Godunov returns to open the season of the world’s most famous opera house. In 1979 it was Claudio Abbado who conducted this opera on the evening of Saint Ambrose, with a production by Jurij Ljubimov.
The opera, with a libretto based on the drama of the same name by Aleksandr Puskin, will be performed in the version of 1869, already seen in 2002 at the Arcimboldi (which at the time hosted the performances of the Teatro alla Scala under renovation).
La Scala’s 2022-2023 season includes 14 operas (with a total of 92 performances) and 63 evenings of ballet.

On the evening of 7 December, Milan and the La Scala Opera House are the ‘stars’ of an extraordinary premiere, on the Feast of Sant’Ambrogio, the Patron Saint of Milan. The inaugural evening of the opera season (the ‘Prima della Scala’) is an extremely popular cultural, institutional and social event, attended by VIPs from the world of culture, politics, fashion and show business.
