On the evening of 7 December, Milan and the La Scala Opera House are the ‘stars’ of an extraordinary premiere, on the Feast of Sant’Ambrogio, the Patron Saint of Milan. The inaugural evening of the opera season (the ‘Prima della Scala’) is an extremely popular cultural, institutional and social event, attended by VIPs from the world of culture, politics, fashion and show business.
“Don Carlo” by Giuseppe Verdi, under the direction of Riccardo Chailly and with Lluis Pasqual’s staging, will open a rich 2023/2024 season with more than 250 performances aimed at a wide and diverse audience. After tracing the development of Verdi’s early creative years with season openings devoted to Joan of Arc, Attila and Macbeth, Riccardo Chailly returns to a masterpiece of the composer’s maturity. An all-star cast is on stage, with René Pape, Anna Netrebko, Francesco Meli, Elīna Garanča, Luca Salsi and Ain Anger.
In addition to 14 opera and 8 ballet titles, all concert cycles (symphony, guest orchestras, singing and piano recitals) are confirmed for the 2023-2024 season, as well as children’s shows with many new features.
On December 7, “Don Carlo” staged at La Scala can be followed live in many places around the city, as it was last year for the “Boris Gudunov” event (see more on Prima diffusa).
