The Diocesano Museum of religious arts, whose headquarters were inaugurated in 2001, hosts over 700 works dating from the 4th to the 21st century A.D.
By maximizing their historic and religious meanings, the museum has always been oriented to the preservation and promotion of the valuable art treasures belonging to the Diocese, with smaller pieces collected from church museums and treasuries across Lombardy. One of the museum’s most interesting area is the Archbishop’s Painting Gallery, hosting collections from some of the Milanese archbishops and paintings from churches of Milan Diocese. In addition, visitors will find the Crespi collection, made of some fine works coming from Tuscany (14th and 15th centuries), and the Marcenaro collection, including religious sculptures and paintings.
In recent years the Museum also started to host religious art by contemporary artists, such as Lucio Fontana, and in 2016 became one of the exhibition locations of the 21st Triennale.
