The highly-central Museo del Novecento, located just steps from the Duomo and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, has been enriched by a new gallery of futurism. Located on the second floor of the museum, the Galleria del Futurismo is the result of complex renovation work and features masterpieces coming from donations and from the repositories of the city’s own collections, hosted in a completely redesigned Sala delle Colonne with new lighting.

The small room at the entrance, previously dedicated to the European avant-garde movements of the early twentieth century, is transformed into an open space that introduces Futurist poetics thanks to the exhibition of Futurist Manifestos and important works on paper by Antonio Sant’Elia and Giacomo Balla. A video installation also refers to the experimental climate of the first thirty years of the twentieth century, with important extracts from Futurist and avant-garde cinema.

The exhibition, which features masterpieces by great masters of Italian Futurism such as Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carrà, Giacomo Balla and Gino Severini is enriched with works from the Antognini Pasquinelli collection. Highlights include four paintings on display for the first time including “Crepuscolo” by Boccioni, “Paesaggio toscano” by Severini, “Velocità d’automobile + luci” by Giacomo Balla and a portrait by Mario Sironi, “Figura”. The works are placed in dialogue with the Futurist masterpieces in the civic collections, which have grown over the years.
