ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Name: Istituto di Moda Burgo (IMB)
Type: Italian private school
Description: 
One of Milan’s most prestigious and notable private fashion schools that trains students for direct entry into the job market. Several of IMB’s former alumni currently work for couture houses of the likes of Armani, Cavalli, Calvin Klein, Kryzia, Ungaro, Dolce & Gabbana, Etro and Versace.
Students are trained by working in close contact with professionals who are active in the field and by following the Burgo Method, patented by the Institute. Education material comprises templates and text books published by IMB itself and used by hundreds of fashion schools throughout the world.
At the end of each academic year, the School opens its doors to the public during the students’ official fashion show, featuring the creations presented as part of their final exam syllabus.
Open since: 1961
Founder: Mr. Fernando Burgo, Italian publisher passionate with fashion and design. He founded the IMB in order to create a leading school in the fashion and design arts. He became its first director since it was established.
Partnerships: IMB is listed in the register of accredited operators for training by the Regione Lombardia.
It boasts past and present partnerships with: the City of Milan, the Provincia di Milano, the Regione Lombardia and the Unione Artigiani.
Other partnerships of IMB are with schools: Sasada Institute (Japan), La Cattolica (Milan, Italy), Shenghen University (China), Moda Lab School (Korea).
Technical collaboration with INIFD (India), a network of 180 fashion design schools which adopted the IMB school books of fashion design and pattern making.
IMB is privilege partner of Lectra, the French company specialized in integrated technology solutions for the textile, home interior, automotive, marine and aerospace industries.
Awards:
“Quality System Certification” in accordance with UNI EN ISO 9001:2000 legislation.
The fashion school is patronized by the National Chamber of Italian Fashion
In 2001 IMB won a competition run by the Egyptian Ministry of Industry and Technological Development. The school was selected to collaborate with the Fashion Design Center (FDC) based in Cairo. Students enrolled in the FDC can learn European fashion skills through the Burgo training method, books, programs and exams.
Memberships:
– EDUITALIA, the association of Italian Schools and Universities that offers programs for international students, often sponsored and subsidized by the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs and by the Italian Diplomatic Network abroad.
– Piattaforma Sistema Formativo Moda (association of Italian institutes, academies and universities providing full or partial education in the fashion field. Its members include, among others, Fondazione Ferrè, Sistema Moda Italia and the National Chamber of Italian Fashion)
Students’ Nationalities: the 50% of students are Italians, the remaining 50% are from other EU and non EU countries.
Accommodation Service: although the Istituto di Moda Burgo does not have dormitory facilities, it nevertheless help students to find accommodation if specifically requested.
Fees and Scholarships: reductions on registration fees are reserved for students applying from any Burgo campus throughout the world (Mexico, Indonesia, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Peru, Egypt, Bolivia, Brazil, Turkey, India, Nepal, Latvia, Albania and Estonia) or those who already have some sort of grounding in fashion. The latter are offered the option of only following that part of the program necessary to complete their study course, with a consequent reduction in enrollment fees.
All other students are offered the option of paying in installments while scholarships are rarely granted. However, notification of scholarships, if and when available, is posted on the the School’s website.

COURSES IN FASHION AND LUXURY GOODS: fashion design, pattern making, dress making, jewelry making

To become: fashion stylist, fashion designer, dressmaker, pattern maker, jewelry maker, shoes designer, accessory designer.
Language of Instruction: English or Italian.
Courses (types and duration):
Professional courses on: fashion styling, fashion design, pattern making and dress making.
Short and summer courses (2 weeks-10 months) on: computer fashion design, computer cad-cam, pattern grading, jewelry making, menswear, womenswear, children’s wear, underwear, shoes design, accessories, beachwear, wedding dress, and theatre costume.
Courses on the same subjects and destined to fashion lovers.
Final Degree/Diploma:
Professional courses: Italian qualified vocational diploma of fashion stylist, fashion designer, dressmaker, pattern maker.
Short courses, computer courses and summer courses: upon successful completion of the course students receive a certificate of attendance issued by IMB.
Attendance: always mandatory.
Professional courses: students can choose to enrol for an intensive learning experience – full-time attendance, the course lasts 1 year – or a normal one – part-time attendance, the course lasts 2 years.
Mode and Assessment: the course syllabus is tailored to better suit the students’ needs on an individual basis. The 80% of the courses is in laboratories, the remaining 20% is theory.
Professional courses (only): there is a monthly assessment and a final exam. During the final exam students discuss their final project in front of an external commission of fashion professionals.
Study Abroad Programs: not available.
Internship Program: yes, however this is reserved for students attending professional courses, which envisage a final exam and the issue of a certified diploma.
Placement: the support service for placement in the job market is the result of IMB’s close relationships with firms, businesses, ateliers and style studios not only in Milan but also across the whole of Italy and throughout the rest of the world, such as, for example, Armani, Cavalli, Valentino, Calvin Klein, Krizia and many others besides. Each year, the Institute receives around 200 employment and internship offers from companies. All students who have graduated from IMB are offered free access to its database.
Class Size: small, each teacher works with a group of 8/15 students, depending on the class (classes of theory are more crowded than laboratories).
Places: limited. As soon as a class is full admissions are closed and the recruitment office inform prospective students about the next available starting dates.
Entry Requirements: applicants must possess the level of competence requested for admission to the course of choice.

Short and special courses are organized on weekly basis.
