ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Name: Istituto Secoli (IS)

Type: Italian Private School

Description: Gregorio Fumach, who created dresses for Queen Margherita of Savoy (1851-1926), was one of the first students to attend Istituto Secoli, an historic private fashion school headquartered in Milan that prepares students for entry into the global job market.
Based on a didactic method targeted at integrating traditional sartorial expertise into mass marketing, students are taught how to transform a stylistic idea into a perfectly designed and executed product – whether this be a dress or a collection – in a bid to ensure that the final creation is able to hold its own in the concrete reality of technology and the fashion market. According to Istituto Secoli “ prêt-a-porter is designed in Italy because Italy boasts the conditions and means to achieve it” and its faculty members teach its international students (among 300 and 400) the art of fashion from sketches to cuts right up to pattern-makingprototypes and sample ranges. During its 80 years of activity, Istituto Secoli has trained generations of pattern makers and international designers, including, in 2010, a group of employees from World Co. Ltd., a leading Japanese fashion company as well as several rising stars on the Italian fashion scene including Francesco Cecchini, Marta Griso and Roberto Cacace.

Open since: 1954

Founder(s)/Mission: the school was originally founded in Treviso and meant to Italian tailors. It was moved to Milan right before the boom of the fashion industry, that turned Milan into the world’s capital of the prêt-à-porter.
