Elizabeth (Lizzie) Osterkamp, a young student from California and a fashion, travel and photography enthusiast, is fulfilling one of her dreams during her studies in Strategic Communication (University of Colorado, USA): to get to know – and be able to tell about – her experience in one of the world’s fashion cities, discovering her favourite fashion brands. Here she tells us about the world of Dolce&Gabbana, between fashion, culture and architecture.
“Inventors of Mediterranean style, Dolce and Gabbana show Italian culture through their attention to detail. Their colorful prints reference Sicily, as this is the birthplace of Domenico Dolce, one of the founders, and pay respects to the island of Sicily by referencing art, architecture and colors. Their style is showcased in the form of clothes, shoes and accessories as well as home furniture. Their store, Dolce&Gabbana Casa, recently opened in Milan and is one of two boutiques in the world.
The store located on Via Montenapoleone is a bit different compared to their other stores
around the world. It combines the past and the future of Dolce and Gabbana, and the store
connects “the energy of the Baroque and the clarity of the Modernism.” The main colors of the store include green and briarwood which makes the store even more unique, as these are not the normal colors used within their other stores. Each detail in the store was included to help re-brand Dolce&Gabbana and help combine the history of the brand and the modern times of today.
The attention to detail within the store was evident from the moment I walked in the door. The large gold mirrors are what caught my attention first. They are very detailed and have little intricate designs carved out of them. I also enjoyed the green patterned displays behind most of the handbags on the first floor and how the same green color is carried throughout the whole store, specifically in the display cases and marble staircase that leads you to the second floor.
The main level offers an array of shoes and bags along with jewelry and beauty, but upstairs houses their more couture clothes that have extravagant patterns. The menswear section is all upstairs with clothes, shoes and accessories. They also have shelves of shoes lining one wall on the main level as well as one wall on the second level. All the clothes are housed on the second floor and are displayed neatly with one of each article of clothing on the rack. Dolce&Gabbana is known for their bright, patterned clothes, which were breathtaking to see in person.”
