About the exhibition

Milan’s Museo del Novecento presents “Mario Sironi. Sintesi e Grandiosità“, (the Italian for Synthesis and grandiosity): a large, in-depth retrospective exhibition that looks back at the work of the great Italian master 60 years after his death.
The more than 100 works on display, retrace the artist’s entire artistic  career, from his early Symbolist period to his adhesion to Futurism, from his original original interpretation of metaphysics in 1919 to the classic moment of the “Novecento Italiano“.
The masterpieces also span from the expressionist crisis of 1929-30 to the monumental painting of the 1930s, up to the second post-war period and the Apocalisse painted shortly before his death.

Into more details

A specific focus is dedicated to the urban landscapes, one of Sironi’s favourites, which is expressed by the paintings dedicated to Milan, created after 1919, which express the drama of the modern city. Other highlights of the artist’s works include his studies on the human figure, on his personal legacy with wall painting in the early 1930s, as well as on the sad and dramatic years before Sironi’s death.
