The Teatro alla Scala celebrates the legend of soprano Maria Callas one hundred years after her birth by presenting an unprecedented exhibition project featuring five voices from the contemporary art scene: Giorgio Armani, Alvin Curran, Latifa Echakhch, Mario Martone and Francesco Vezzoli.
The exhibition restores the portrait of a complete artist capable of blending singing and acting in a unique combination that made her a timeless icon, arousing even when she was alive the interest and admiration of artists, scholars, filmmakers and literati who transported her aura far beyond the boundaries of musical theater. Forty-six years after his death, La Scala pays tribute to the artist who inextricably linked his name to the theatre by performing 23 opera titles in 28 performances between 1950 and 1961, including six season openings.
Five contemporary creatives have been called upon to interpret the myth of Maria Callas with five projects created ad hoc: for fashion, designer Giorgio Armani presents a dress that aims to give shape to a voice; musician and composer Alvin Curran presents an unprecedented composition; for contemporary art, artists Latifa Echakhch, with a site-specific intervention, and Francesco Vezzoli; and director Mario Martone presents a short film starring Sonia Bergamasco about the soprano’s fascination with Ingeborg Bachmann.
