Where®Milan met Michele Coppola, Head of Intesa Sanpaolo’s Cultural Activities, who told us about the latest events at this magnificent, 800sq.m. exhibition space: two historic ‘palazzi’ in the heart of the city, formerly home to the headquarters of the Banca Intesa Sanpaolo.
What are the next projects on your rich events calendar?
From the end of June to September, we will be participating in the tribute retrospective that the City of Milan is dedicating to Emilio Isgrò, one of Italy’s main protagonists of contemporary art, with an exhibition that involves the three sites of Palazzo Reale, Casa Manzoni and the Gallerie d’Italia. Our vault will host the unpublished ‘erasure’ of Hayez’s portrait of Manzoni, created especially by Isgrò for the occasion. In September, the Gallerie will host an exhibition on contemporary Slovakian art. The program of impressive exhibitions will continue in autumn with a series of painting by Canaletto and Bellottoda, originating from private collections and museums across the world. In the meantime, we will continue to promote our permanent exhibitions ‘Da Canova a Boccioni (‘From Canova to Boccioni’) and ‘Cantiere del ’900.2’, featuring Intesa San Paolo’s 19th and 20th century collections. Furthermore, we will once again be offering the Gallerie’s ‘standard’ initiatives including guided tours, courses and educational workshops.
When visiting the museum what top ten things should not be missed?
At our 18th century exhibition, must sees include Canova’s bas reliefs, Francesco Hayez’s paintings, Giovanni Segantini’s ‘Gathering of Silkworm Cocoons’, ‘The Dance of the Hours’ by Gaetano Previati and Umberto Boccioni’s ‘Three Women’. Alternately, unmissable masterpieces of our 20th century collection include ‘Achrome’ by Piero Manzoni, ‘Girl Walking’ ‘ by Michelangelo Pistoletto, ‘Moon in Venice’ by Fontana, ‘Red Black’ by Burri and ‘Mannequins on the Seashore’ by de Chirico. In short, the major interpreters of 19th and 20th century Italian art, as well as current-day protagonists, like Pistoletto.
What services does your museum offer international visitors?
To offer the public the best service possible, we provide audio guides and multilingual guided tours. We also organize educational workshops in English, French and Spanish for foreigners.
