Built in 1135 by Bernardo di Clairvaux, the Abbey of Chiaravalle is located in Parco Agricolo Sud Milano, a network of canals dating back to the time when the Cistercian monks were instrumental in draining the marshland surrounding it. The abbey, still today considered one of the most important in Italy, though inspired by the rigorous canons of Cistercian architecture, nevertheless features elements of Lombard-Romaneseque tradition, apparent in the church’s fired brickwork façade a capanna and in the arches of the nave. Conversely, the cloisters and bell tower, an example of Gothic inspiration, date back to the 13th century and are affectionately referred to by the Milanese as “Ciribiciaccola”. The Abbey of Chiaravalle houses the “Madonna with Child” by Bernardino Luini. Organic products produced in the area can be purchased from the monastery’s shop.
